This report describes the findings of a comprehensive literature review of the costs and environmental impacts of road salt within the Adirondacks (NY, U.S.). The results of the cost-benefit analysis indicate that de-icing materials with a higher upfront cost (like calcium or magnesium chloride) incur lower costs over their entire lifetime.
