This study evalauted the effects of various cropping systems and of short-term tillage on soil organic carbon and total nitrogen in shallow soils throughout Iowa (U.S.). The results indicate that minimizing tillage intensity and increasing the diversity of cover crops (specifically to include perennial grasses) could increase the carbon and nitrogen sequestration capacity of soils in the Midwest.
