This research report on winter maintenance practices that can lead to minimized salt use was prepared by Fortin Consulting, Inc. for the City of Burnsville with funding from the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s Local Road Research Board. The report investigates three (3) research areas: non-chloride-based deicing materials, the effects of pavement characteristics (including permeable pavements) on the efficacy of deicing materials, and recommendations for changes in winter driving standards.
