This article presents a review of how the NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries uses its Maritime Heritage Program to engage communities and increase public interest. It discussess the challenges and opportunities facing the program along with a narrative of how an interdisciplinary approach has been used to integrate cultural, historical, and ecological interests.
